Best Croissant in Chicago found at Floriole Cafe and Bakery

Traditional croissant

I visited the Floriole Bakery at 1220 W. Webster in Lincoln Park because the owners Sandra and Mathieu Holl were kind enough to allow a class of  5 year old kids into the bakery to learn the art of bread making. This incredibly beautiful cafe and bakery patiently had staff members let the kids get their hands sticky while pounding dough into the perfect loaf of bread. After the "field trip" we picked up a few croissants and their smoked turkey sandwich with cranberry mostrada and lettuce on sourdough bread. Never excepting to taste a great croissant outside of France I was blown away. "Wow" a REAL croissant, I can not believe it. For the first time in Chicago someone has gotten it right. The turkey sandwich was also delicious and the multi grain bread was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. 5 stars for the owners and this little French paradise in Chicago.

Sandra Holl was trained in San Francisco at the California Culinary Academy and worked as a baker at the renowned Tartine Bakery. She has contributed at Bon Appetit, and been featured on StarChefs.com, and was nominated for Best Chef by TimeOut Chicago.

Mathieu Holl, born and raised in Paris, grew up with a great appreciation and love for food and pastries. Although Mathieu is not a trained chef he has an amazing palate and the ability to critique even the most perfect pastry. As Sandra says, “He makes me a better baker. . . even if it makes me crazy sometimes”.

First Fur ban in the United States

West Hollywood is putting animal rights ahead of fashion by a vote to approve a first-in-the-nation ban of fur clothing.
"We made history. we're the first place in the world, I believe, certainly the country, to take that step on banning fur." said Ed Buck, an organizer of the local group Fur Free Weho.

Almost half of 200 apparel stores in West Hollywood sell at least some fur items with revenues estimated at 2 million.
Ironically, furniture is fine. The ordinance cites no clothing can be made from fox, mink, rabbit, bear, seal, or chinchilla. Leather goods are fine and sheared wool is not affected. \
The effective date is September 21, 2013.

Although Lagerfeld said he doesn't personally wear fur, he told the Telegraph:

"In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish."
